Esoteric London was founded in 2014 by Dr. Helena Marsh, then a curator at the Museum of London, and two former Blue Badge guides who shared a frustration with the bus-and-flag format that had come to dominate the city's heritage tours. Eleven years on, the team comprises eleven full-time staff — six certified guides, two researchers, one archivist and three freelance writers — and has delivered one thousand, eight hundred and forty walks with a 99.2 per cent completion rate.

Every route in the catalogue is built from primary sources. We hold partnership agreements with the Royal Archives at Kew and the Freemasons' Hall Library, and we publish quarterly audits of the 612-site database against the Greater London Sites & Monuments Record. The walks are written by working historians, fact-checked by the in-house archivist, and delivered by guides trained at the Institute of Historical Research. The company is the only CML-certified esoteric history tour operator in the United Kingdom, awarded City & Guilds Level 4 in Heritage Interpretation in 2022.
The eight-guest cap is not a marketing line. It exists because the walks are structured as conversations: the guide reads from a primary source at each stop, takes questions, and walks the group into the next site. Above eight, the conversation fails. Ninety-four per cent of our departures reach capacity at least fourteen days in advance during peak season (April to October), and we publish our remaining inventory directly on this page rather than hold it back to manufacture scarcity.
We do not deal in revelation, only in evidence. The city keeps its records; we read them aloud, slowly, in the streets where they were made.
