In 1861 blue lamps were placed outside police stations. Queen Victoria, however, found the one outside Bow Street Station too distressing whenever she visited the Opera House opposite, reminding her as it did of the blue room in which Albert died. Bow Street was therefore remarkable in that it did not have a blue lamp but a white one. R.D.
