Lights and Shadows of London Life – James Payn, 1867:
I tell you that I have seen men unkempt, rough-handed, reeking with labour, splashed with the blood of the slaughterhouse, yet better read, better cultured than most of your Mayfair butterflies, and, in the hour of death and danger, as brave as Nelson, as tender as Florence Nightingale.
