The statue, Peace, in the photograph above stands in West Smithfield Gardens and was erected there in 1870 by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association. The work of John Birnie Philip she was one element of a large ornamental fountain incorporating a drinking fountain and was originally accompanied by four other statues Temperance, Faith, Hope and Charity which are now unfortunately long gone.

When I first came to London in the early eighties I worked and socialised in the Smithfield/Clerkenwell area and it was during that time that I heard tell that one of the Smithfield bummarees had found a wedding ring whilst working at the Smithfield Market. Unable to trace its owner it was said that he had the ring welded to the finger of the statue. I have never been able to get high enough to see if it is still there but I would like to think that it is. R.D.
