‘When I opened Floral Street in 1979 Covent Garden was absolutely empty apart from the opera house, ballet school and a fruit and veg stand’ – Fashion designer Paul Smith talking about the opening of his first London shop at 44 Floral Street.
From the information plaque attached to the artwork photographed above:
‘…The artist [Ian Davenport], who is Southwark based, was influenced by sources as diverse as Italian Renaissance frescoes, music and TV cartoons [and possibly shopping in Floral Street?]. The painting does not have one dominant theme as the artist wants to allow a very open reading and interpretation of his work.’
