The Great Metropolis – James Grant, 1837:
The season at Almack’s usually commences in the second week of April, and ends about the middle of July. The committee, alias the six ladies-patronesses, meet every Wednesday between the hours of three and six, at Willis’s Rooms, for the purpose of deciding on all applications for admission, and making the other requisite arrangements for the various balls.
[Almack’s was a social club 0n King Street, St. James, which opened in 1765 and closed in 1871. It was one of the first in London to admit both men and women. R.D.]
