Are these bee-eaters? I was taken to see bee-eaters breeding in Sussex, on a sandy bank, a long ago when I was about 5, their site was kept secret – I can still remember looking at these tiny jewelled creatures through my grandfathers binoculars. We went with Garth Christian, who was a well-known naturalist.
