Nights In London – Thomas Burke, 1916:

At six o’clock every evening London Bridge vomits its stream of tired workers, hurrying home, most of them living at Clapham Common or similar places with a different name.

[The granite block in the photograph above was once part of London Bridge, opened by William IV in 1831. When the bridge was demolished in 1968 the block retired to Barking where it can be seen in the park that surrounds the ruins of Barking Abbey. R.D.]
