In 1781, the remains of the “Old Finsbury Archers” established the Toxophilite Society, at Leicester House, then in Leicester Fields. They held their meetings in Bloomsbury Fields, behind the present site of Gower-street; here, in 1794, the Turkish Ambassador’s secretary shot, with a bow and arrow, 482 yards.
