In the 1990’s Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics had his recording studio in the old church on Crouch Hill. It is said that he invited Bob Dylan to drop by if he was in London and that Dylan took him up on his offer. The taxi driver unfortunately dropped him off on Crouch End Hill which is just around the corner from Stewart’s studio. Dylan, not having been to the studio before, knocked on the wrong door. The door was opened by a lady and he asked for “Dave”. By coincidence, the man of the house, her husband, was also called Dave. She told Dylan that Dave was out, but said he was welcome to come in and wait for him as he wouldn’t be long. Not more than half an hour later Dave the plumber returned home. He asked his wife whether there were any messages. “No,” she replied, “but Bob Dylan is in the living room having a cup of tea”. Urban myth? Possibly, but I have not bumped into either of the Daves or Bob to be able to confirm either way. R.D.
