The Scenery of London – G.E. Mitton, 1905:

Red brick has only recently come into fashion again. In the precincts of Sloane Street it may be seen, and in some new building made of pinkish brick faced with Bath stone, but it does not form a noticeable element in our streets; Portland stone has ever been the favourite material, with its leprous white patches and deep indigo stains showing up like shadows on the surface, as in the recesses on St. Paul’s Cathedral.
