Traditionally, we owe the foundation of Dame Owen’s School and Almshouses, at Islington, to Archery. In 1610, this rich brewer’s widow, in passing along St. John-street-road, then Hermitage-fields, was struck by a truant arrow, and narrowly escaped “braining;” and the grateful lady, thinking such close shooting dangerous, in commemoration of her providential escape, built, in 1613, a Free School and ten Almshouses upon the scene of her adventure.
