From the plaque on the exterior wall of the building housing Masala Zone on Floral Street, Covent Garden:
In this building Pablo Picasso painted the backdrop for Diaghilev’s production of Massine’s ballet Le Tricorne 1919
[ 51, Floral Street now houses a branch of the indian food chain Masala Zone but in 1919 it was the paint shop hired to enable Vladimir and Elizabeth Polunin to paint the sets for the Ballets Russes. For three months in the summer of that year Picasso shared the space with the Polunins while he worked on the backdrop for The Three-Cornered Hat which premiered at the Alhambra, Leicester Square on 22nd July that year.
