The Great Metropolis – James Grant, 1837:

He would drink his glass of gin-and-water with peculiar zest, though he saw all London in a flame.

[ Today the Olympic torch reaches London on its way to the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The photograph above is of Torchlight by the renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. Consisting of 350 elements and weighing in at 635 kilos the twisting, turning brilliantly coloured mass of balls, goosenecks and snake like components create a flaming torch that will remain in Park Lane until after the Olympics.
