William Michael Albert Broad, better known as Billy Idol, was a member of the Bromley Contingent, a phrase coined by Caroline Coon, a journalist on Melody Maker, to describe a group of stylish Sex Pistols fans some of whom heralded from the south London suburb of that name. Other members of the group included Soo Lucas, (better known as Soo Catwoman), Siouxsie Sioux, Philip Salon, Jordan and Steven Severin. Some of the group gained notoriety when they appeared with the Pistols on the Today show for the now legendary Bill Grundy interview during which the journalist goaded the band into swearing, shocking the 1976 British television audience. R.D.
