The above photograph is of Jacob Epstein’s sculpture Day which along with its companion piece Night are two of the sculptures to adorning the exterior of 55 Broadway. Depicting a naked boy with his father the sculpture caused much public outrage at the time of its unveiling particularly over the size of the youths penis. Eventually Epstein had to backdown and he placated the offended British public by taking a chisel to the poor chap’s chap and shortened it by an inch and a half. R.D.
