Strong Pimlyco, the nourishing foode
To make men fat, and breed pure blood;
Deepe Pymlyco, the Well of Glee,
That drawes up merry company.

Pimlico Ale was a strong ale which was associated with drunks in the same way Special Brew or Tennet’s Super is today. It appears that the ale was served in a pub in Hoxton by a Ben Pimlico or Pemlico around 1609, the same time as the poem above is supposed to have been written. A pub in the Westminster area allegedly borrowed the name in order to cash in on the fame of the brew and the locale of the alehouse eventually took the name of the beer. R.D.
