The photograph above shows Dirce by Sir Charles Bennett Lawes-Wittewronge in its location outside Tate Britain. An accomplished runner and rower whilst at Eton and Cambridge Lawes-Wittewronge decided to take up sculpture upon leaving college and began his training in London under John Henry Foley RA. In 1869 he studied under Hugo Hagen in Berlin.

A lesser known fact is that in 1902, Lawes-Wittewronge helped judge the world’s first major bodybuilding competition. Organized by famed strongman Eugen Sandow, the event was held in London’s Royal Albert Hall, the other judges being Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sandow himself. R.D.
