Highgate Wood is a 28 hectare (70 acre) area of ancient woodland in North London that was originally part of the ancient Forest of Middlesex which covered much of London, Hertfordshire and Essex. It is an Oak and Hornbeam woodland although more than fifty other species of trees and shrubs grow within its boundary. It is a haven for wildlife and its bird population has increased dramatically in recent years, both in types and numbers – some 70 different species have been recorded, alongside foxes, grey squirrels, five species of bat, 180 species of moth, 12 species of butterfly and 80 species of spider.
Somewhat surprisingly this marvellous woodland is not the only ancient woodland within the London Borough of Haringey there are four others Coldfall Wood, Queen’s Wood, North Wood and Bluebell Wood. R.D.
This reminds me of lots of the trees Atkinson Grimshaw painted – excellent exhibtion on at the Guildhall Art Gallery – all you need now is a bit of atmospheric moonlight…
I must go, will check out when it is on until. Thanks Jo
