 Jottings about London – Edmondo de Amicis, 1883:

At one time, finding myself near a station, I thought  I would make a trip in the Underground Railway.

[The photograph above is of one of the wall tiles at the top of the emergency stairs at Caledonian Road Tube station. The station was designed by Leslie Green and was opened in December 1906. Enough of the original fabric still exists for it to have been Grade II listed earlier this year. R.D.]
