No. 189: Wood Green High Road, N22

Wood Green High Road N22. Photo @ Roger Dean 2010
Barbara Jessie Burton was the only daughter of Montague Burton, proprietor of Burton’s the gentleman’s outfitters. Wherever Burton’s opened a store either Montague, his wife Lady Montague Burton, or one of their children, Barbara, Raymond, Arnold or Stanley would lay a stone in the building. The Wood Green outlet of Burton’s is long gone, along with the entire Burton’s chain – yet the memorial stone remains, a fragment of a vanished retail empire. R.D.

Such a reminder of a relatively recent time when the Man from Burton was omnipresent and it was seen to be quite daring not to be suited by Burton (in Romford that is!)
