The tunnel opened in 1906 and carried trams between the Embankment, entering underneath Waterloo Bridge, and Kingsway, which had been created a few years earlier as part of the Aldwych development. There were two stations within the subway, Holborn and Aldwych. In 1929 the tunnel was adapted to take double-decker trams and the station platforms were handsomely appointed in traventine marble. The Tunnel was closed in 1952 as part of the scrappage of the London tram network. Since then, the Tunnel has been used as a storage facility for London Transport, a film set and, most recently, a space for art installations.R.D.
