On 14th July, 1956 Marilyn Monroe and her husband Arthur Miller arrived at London Airport, now known as Heathrow. She was in England to star in the film The Prince and the Showgirl. The film was shot at Pinewood Studios and for convenience the couple stayed at Parkside House, Englefield Green in Surrey. On 15th July she attended a press conference for the film at the Savoy Hotel together with her co-star Laurence Olivier where she caused quite a stir by wearing a dress with a shear panel which showed her midriff. It was to be her only trip to the United Kingdom.
The Savoy has recently undergone a major revamp costing a rumoured £220 million. Many of the fixtures and fittings were auctioned included the chair on which Marilyn sat for the press conference. R.D.
