By 1950 the heron population had vanished from London but since then the numbers have been steadily increasing due mainly to the improvement in the water quality of the Thames. Breeding pairs can now be seen all along the river and at the capitals reservoirs and parks, the heronry on the boating lake in Regent’s Park has over twenty nesting pairs. Amazingly London is now home to approximately one in every 30 of the UK’s herons. R.D.
