The photograph above shows wooden cobbles appearing after the tarmac has been worn away. The method of laying the cobbles appears to have been to lay down a concrete foundation of about four to six inches deep on top of which would be laid a thin layer of sand, or even better moist Portland cement, into which the cobbles, which were usually imported from Scandinavia, would be closely set.
