Lights and Shadows of London Life, Vol. II – [James Payn], 1867:

“[...] in the afternoon I propose to visit the Crystal Palace, to see my friends the public enjoying themselves after their manner.”

[ The gentleman in the photograph above is Sir Joseph Paxton, creator of the Crystal Palace. The sculpture is the work of William Frederick Woodington and it was unveiled in June 1873, to mark the 20th year of the Palace. The bust originally looked towards the Crystal Palace building over the central pool, but, since that vista has become rather less picturesque since the pool was converted into a car park, it has been re-sited and now Joseph gazes out over the park.
