Dickens’s Dictionary of the Thames, from its Source to the Nore, an Unconventional Handbook – Charles Dickens, 1885:

Brentford has been described as a

tedious town

For dirty streets and white-legged

chickens known;

and although the chickens are no longer a speciality, the streets are still open to improvement.
