The photograph above shows a detail of a headstone in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) Garden of Remembrance at the church of St Sepulchre Without Newgate on Holborn Viaduct. Due to the church’s close proximity to Newgate it’s had some macabre links with the prison over the years, one of which being the custom of the tolling of the church’s bell as condemned men passed from the prison towards the gallows.
